Trusting the source of information also means questioning the intent. When someone presents you with a message, asking why will reveal some interesting properties. Their intentions should affect your “reading” of the message in some way.
Why is this message targeted at me (at everyone? all the time?) in particular?
Why is this message arriving now?
What change in behavior is it asking for?
What do I believe that will have to be modified, or abandoned, based on this message? How does it measure up to the original belief?
Remember - don’t be cynical! Not everyone is trying to fool you all of the time. Even conflicting messages can tell you about someone else’s perspective, which is valuable, even if you strongly disagree. If you have the courage to be open to different messages, you can come to a broader understanding of the world.
